THE BITMAPS LIST + LINKS

* MDGX.BMP, AXCELMAX.BMP, AXCELSUN.BMP, CODEFUSE.BMP + MAXSPEED.BMP are
freely distributed original artwork by Conny Jonsson's Graphics:
http://connect.to/conny/
created in JPEG format (*.JPG, 1024x768 pixels, 16 million colors, 24-bit).
I converted them to Windows BitMaP format (*.BMP, 256 colors, 8-bit) in Adobe
PhotoShop:
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/
for ease of use as background wallpapers, to reduce MS Windows memory
requirements and compressed ZIP file size.

* DESERT.BMP (640x480 pixels, 16 colors, 4-bit, RGB encoded) is freely
distributed original artwork by MDGx.

* DOSSHELL.BMP (640x480 pixels, 16 colors, 4-bit, RGB encoded) is a captured
screen of MS DosShell for DOS.

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR DESKTOP BACKGROUND WALLPAPER

* Windows 95/98/NT4+SP6a/2000/ME/XP/2003/Vista:

1. Place all .BMP files in the folder of your choice.
2. Right-click on an empty Desktop spot.
3. Click Properties.
3. Select the Background tab.
5. Click Browse to select your own bitmap [defaults to .BMP format if Active
Desktop (View as Web Page) is disabled = MS IE 5.xx MUST be installed IF using
Win95/OSR1/OSR2/NT4 to access the Active Desktop feature, which is NOT
necessary to have .BMP files as your Desktop background] located in a folder
on your local hard drive(s)/partition(s).
6. Make sure to check the "Center" box if the screen size is larger than your
selected image.
7. Click OK/Apply.

TIPS:
MS Plus! for Windows 95, Windows 95B/95C OSR 2.x, 98/98 SE(U), ME, NT4+SP6a,
2000, XP, 2003 + Vista users can stretch the wallpaper size to fit the entire
screen area independent of Desktop size:
- MS Plus! 95 + OSR2: right-click on an empty Desktop spot -> Properties ->
Plus! or Effects tab -> check the "Stretch desktop wallpaper to fit the
screen" box -> click OK/Apply.
- Windows 98, NT4+SP6a, 2000, ME, XP, 2003 + Vista: right-click on an empty
Desktop spot -> Properties -> Background tab -> in the Desktop box scroll to
"Stretch" -> click OK/Apply.
To use any image in JPEG/JPG/GIF/PNG format as your Desktop background
wallpaper you need to install MS Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 [84.1 MB, English,
free]:
http://downloads.evolt.org.uk/browsers/ie/32bit/5.5_SP2/ie55sp2.exe
if using Windows 95/OSR1/OSR2/NT4 and then enable Active Desktop (View As Web
Page) if using Windows 95/OSR1/OSR2/98/NT4/ME/2000.
In Windows XP, 2003 + Vista Active Desktop is always enabled.

* Windows/WfWG 3.1x + NT 3.xx:

1. Place all .BMP files in the directory of your choice.
2. Change the default directory that contains your wallpapers by editing your
WIN.INI file, found in your Windows directory. Open it with Notepad/Sysedit
and scroll down to the [Desktop] section. Add/modify the BmpDir= line to
point to the directory where your favorite BitMaPs reside (C:\BITMAPS in this
example):

[Desktop]
BmpDir=C:\BITMAPS

3. Open Control Panel or run CONTROL.EXE.
4. Double-click on the Desktop icon.
5. Click on the down arrow that lists your Windows wallpapers and scroll to
the bitmap you want. All your wallpapers (in .BMP format) MUST be located in
the same directory as shown on the WIN.INI line above for this to work.
6. Make sure to check the "Center Bitmap" box if the screen size is larger
than your selected image.
7. Click OK.

TIP:
In Windows/WfWG 3.xx you canNOT stretch/shrink the wallpaper to match your
Desktop resolution, unless you use a dedicated 3rd party tool like AllPaper
[30 KB, free]:
ftp://ftp.pcmag.com/archives/1994/0913/allpap.zip
But you can use your favorite image editing tool (e.g. MS PaintBrush, Adobe
PhotoShop, Paint Shop Pro, LView Pro etc) to change BitMaP size to match any
Desktop resolution.

SPICE UP YOUR DESKTOP

"Spice" up your Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003/Vista Desktop background while
using almost no resources by using MINI.BMP (included), a small (9x1 pixels)
32-bit (true color = 16 million colors) BitMaP as your Desktop background:
1. Right-click on an empty Desktop spot.
2. Select Properties.
3. Click the Background tab.
4. Click the Browse button to locate and select MINI.BMP as your Desktop
background Wallpaper.
5. Select Stretch under "Display:" or check the "Stretch desktop wallpaper to
fit the screen" box.
6. Your Desktop screen resolution MUST be set to 16-bit (high color = 65,000
colors) or 32-bit (true color = 16 million colors).
7. Done. ;-)

FYI:
You can create/edit your own tiny BMPs to display "custom" patterns:
experiment with different colors + sizes (the sky's the limit) by using a
[free(ware)] painting tool:
http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#GRA
I have used only basic colors in MINI.BMP, but you can use any color combos
and/or factors: gamma, brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, luminance etc.
If using MS Paint (PaintBrush), make sure your Desktop screen resolution is
32-bit (true color = 16 million colors) before running MSPAINT. That way you
can create a new BMP of same resolution as your screen from scratch, without
having to change BMP resolution from within MS Paint (PaintBrush).
Because MINI.BMP is only 9x1 pixels in size, it doesn't matter it is 32-bit
(true color = 16 million colors), it takes very little Windows memory to
display.

Have fun.
