Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows 95, 98, 98SE + ME


Windows System Key Combinations

  • F1 = Help
  • CTRL+ESC = Open Start menu
  • ALT+TAB = Switch between open programs
  • ALT+F4 = Quit program
  • SHIFT+DELETE = Delete item permanently

Windows Programs Key Combinations

  • CTRL+C = Copy
  • CTRL+X = Cut
  • CTRL+V = Paste
  • CTRL+Z = Undo
  • CTRL+B = Bold
  • CTRL+U = Underline
  • CTRL+I = Italic

Mouse Click/Keyboard Modifier Combinations for Shell Items/Objects

  • SHIFT+right click = Displays shortcut menu containing alternative commands, if any
  • SHIFT+double click = Runs alternate default command, if any (2nd item on the menu)
  • ALT+double click = Displays Properties
  • SHIFT+DELETE = Deletes item(s) immediately without sending it/them to the Recycle Bin

General Keyboard Only Commands

  • F1 = Starts Windows Help
  • F10 = Activates menu bar options
  • SHIFT+F10 Opens shortcut menu for selected item (same as right-clicking an item/object)
  • CTRL+ESC = Opens Start menu (use ARROW keys to select an item)
  • CTRL+ESC or ESC = Selects Start button (press TAB to select the taskbar or press SHIFT+F10 for context/right-click menu)
  • ALT+DOWN ARROW = Opens drop-down list box
  • ALT+TAB = Switch to another running program, if any (hold down ALT key and then press TAB key to view the task switching window)
  • SHIFT = Press and hold down SHIFT key while you insert a CD/CD-ROM/DVD-ROM/BD to bypass the automatic Run... function
  • ALT+SPACE = Displays System menu main window (from System menu you can restore, move, resize, minimize, maximize or close the window)
  • ALT+- (ALT+hyphen) = Displays Multiple Document Interface (MDI) child window System menu (from MDI child window System menu you can restore, move, resize, minimize, maximize or close the child window)
  • CTRL+TAB = Switch to next child window of a Multiple Document Interface (MDI) program
  • ALT+underlined letter in menu = Opens menu
  • ALT+F4 = Closes current window
  • CTRL+F4 = Closes current Multiple Document Interface (MDI) window
  • ALT+F6 = Switch between multiple windows within same program (for example, when Notepad Find dialog box is displayed, ALT+F6 switches between Find dialog box and main Notepad window)

Shell Items/Objects and General Folder/Windows Explorer Shortcuts

For a selected item/object:
  • F2 = Rename item/object
  • F3 = Find all files
  • CTRL+X = Cut
  • CTRL+C = Copy
  • CTRL+V = Paste
  • SHIFT+DELETE = Delete selection immediately without sending item(s) to the Recycle Bin
  • ALT+ENTER = Open Properties for selected item/object

Copy File

  • Press and hold down CTRL key while dragging a file to another folder

Create Shortcut

  • Press and hold down CTRL+SHIFT while dragging a file to the desktop or a folder

General Folder/Shortcut Control

  • F4 = Selects Go To A Different Folder box and moves down the entries in the box (if toolbar active in Windows Explorer)
  • F5 = Refreshes current window
  • F6 = Moves among panes in Windows Explorer
  • CTRL+G = Opens Go To Folder tool (Windows 95 Windows Explorer only)
  • CTRL+Z = Undo last command
  • CTRL+A = Select all items in current window
  • BACKSPACE = Switch to parent folder
  • SHIFT+Click+Close button = Close current (sub)folder (if any selected) plus all parent folders

Windows Explorer Tree Control

  • Numeric Keypad * = Expands everything under current selection
  • Numeric Keypad + = Expands current selection
  • Numeric Keypad - = Collapses current selection
  • RIGHT ARROW = Expands current selection if it is not expanded, otherwise goes to 1st child
  • LEFT ARROW = Collapses current selection if it is expanded, otherwise goes to parent

Properties Control

  • CTRL+TAB or CTRL+SHIFT+TAB = Cycles through Property tabs

Accessibility Shortcuts

  • Press SHIFT 5 times = Toggles Sticky Keys on and off
  • Press and hold down right SHIFT key for 8 seconds = Toggles Filter Keys on and off
  • Press and hold down NUM LOCK key for 5 seconds = Toggles Toggle Keys on and off
  • Left ALT+left SHIFT+NUM LOCK = Toggles Mouse Keys on and off
  • Left ALT+left SHIFT+PRINT SCREEN = Toggles high contrast on and off

Microsoft Natural Keyboard Keys

  • WinKey = Start menu
  • WinKey+R = Run... dialog box
  • WinKey+M = Minimize all
  • SHIFT+ WinKey+M = Undo minimize all
  • WinKey+F1 = Help Menu
  • WinKey+E = Windows Explorer
  • WinKey+F = Find files or folders
  • WinKey+D = Minimizes all open windows and brings Desktop in foreground
  • CTRL+ WinKey+F = Find computer
  • CTRL+ WinKey+TAB = Moves selected item focus from Start to Quick Launch toolbar to system tray (use RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW to move focus to items on Quick Launch toolbar and system tray)
  • WinKey+TAB = Cycle through Taskbar buttons/icons/items
  • WinKey+Break = System Properties dialog box
  • Application/Menu key = Displays context/shortcut menu for selected item

  • WinKey+L = Log off Windows
  • WinKey+P = Starts Print Manager dialog box
  • WinKey+C = Opens Control Panel (CP)

Dialog Box Keyboard Commands

  • TAB = Move to next control in dialog box
  • SHIFT+TAB = Move to previous control in dialog box
  • SPACEBAR = If current control is a button, this clicks the button; if current control is check box, this toggles the check box; if current control is an option, this selects the option
  • ENTER = Equivalent to clicking selected button (the button with the outline)
  • ESC = Equivalent to clicking Cancel button
  • ALT+underlined letter in dialog box item = Move to corresponding item
